Artemis
Andy Weird admittedly missed the mark on this book. The overall story is well told, but the characters just constantly make stupid decisions and never make an effort to correct their thinking even after they say they are going to make changes. The book also feels just a little too long.
The Book in 1 Sentence
Andy Weir's one and only 7 where a flawed character just continues to survive by being the stupidest smart person.
Brief Review
Andy Weird admittedly missed the mark on this book. The overall story is well told, but the characters just constantly make stupid decisions and never make an effort to correct their thinking even after they say they are going to make changes. The book also feels just a little too long. I am not sure why, but it just feels stretched.
Why I Read this book
After reading "The Martian" by Andy Weird, a truly spectacular book that the movie does incredible justice to, I wanted to read his other book, which was this one. That was years ago. Recently I saw a reply to a tweet from Andy that I says (I am paraphrasing), "I attempted to write a flawed character as a change the The Martian, but I ended up making her too flawed." I have spent hours looking for that tweet so I could have it for this review, but I can't find it. However, that honesty made me enjoy the second interaction with the book so much more than I did the first time. Also, Rosario Dawson being the narrator in the Audible version is great. If the rumor is true, she is supposed to be the actress who play's Jazz in the movie.
In-Depth Review
The Moon is now a base and our protagonist is a courier/smuggler that gets caught in the crossfire of warring factions in a bid to make some additional money. The story itself isn't bad, I 100% can see this happening based on the way the United States likes to run new endeavors.
Like I said previously, the story is great overall, the issue really is the details. Jazz is overly stupid for being such a brilliant engineer. She constantly makes overt statements about going to change this or change that, and if She had done ANY of those changes, half this story would have not taken place.
The other issue is her continued forced alienation of people because "She wronged them" which in general doesn't make sense to a degree. However, I enjoy the overall mystery and action in the book. Which again, the second time around I felt was much more enjoyable.
Rating
I hate Jazz. I will openly admit that as she truly is the stupidest smart person of all time. Constant bad decision that get saved by chance. The story is really well involved and enjoyable. Worth the read for the story alone, just know that Jazz will make you angry. Its a 7, but Andy's honesty makes it that acceptable.
