Children of Memory
Tchaikovsky is one of the authors out there. This book is a disappointing finale to a weird series of books that ends with a pointless story, world building, but a storyline that otherwise doesn't fulfil the promises of the previous books.
The Book in 1 Sentence
A multistoried world where characters have multiple lives to try and fix the issues on the new world.
Brief Review
Tchaikovsky is one of the authors out there. This book is a disappointing finale to a weird series of books that ends with a pointless story. Similar character structures and world building, but a story line that otherwise doesn't fulfil the promises of the previous books. However, the books pacing and coherence is substantially better than the other books.
Why I Read this book
I wanted to finish this series and I am so glad it is over.
In-Depth Review
So you start at the end of the last book finished and what a dumb way to finish this series. If you have read my review of [[Children of Ruin]] then you know that I generally can't stand this series in the beginning and then am generally invested by the end. This book was the exact opposite.
So lets talk about the characters, which once again are the same as previous books, but different as its been a lot of time. The exception to this is that this book does focus only on a couple characters I'd say 80% of the book is following Maranda and a new character Lyft (Not the car ride share). The author does do a great job telling this story, but is insistent on this time jump crap that is the same as the previous books.
I will say that one of the good things about this book is that there is a lot less of the narrated mystery voice than previous books, or at least it is called out a bit better than other books so it was easier to understand who was saying what. This also might be because the narrator is in theory two people talking to each other to have the same understanding.
The world itself, specially the actual physical world, is so lack luster and you really don't have any feeling that it is growing or dying in the sense as you did with the previous ones. I know I am spending a lot of time comparing the books which I don't typically do, but this whole series is universe building based on the space fairing humans, little "H".
The whole story though is pointless. The characters don't grow with the exception of one, the planet doesn't change, and the final scene is just a forced bit of empathy that makes no sense for the story other than to satisfy one person.
The whole left over piece of story just is pointless and I think the author just played into something. I can't specify this without providing spoilers. This is still a new book so I won't do that.
Rating
This series in general has made me mad. The time jumps, the mystery narrator, and the lack of cohesion until the end. This book is the reverse and is worse than the other ones because the ending is POINTLESS. I expected some other twist or whatever to happen, but I honestly figured out the story early on. It is a 5. I'm so glad its over.
