Review
It is not often that I don't see the twist coming, but damn was I wrong, kind of, about the ending of this movie. They story itself is wildly incoherent at times, but it is intentional once you see the end. I think in general the story itself is a little confusing even at the end. It will require you to pay attention to the whole thing to understand what is going on.
I will say that the acting was really good by the main cast. The support cast was inconsequential at best, but the main cast was great. Florence Pugh is CRAZY good and since this came out around the same time as Black Widow, but this is such a crazy departure that shows the juggernaut of an actress she is. Chris Pine is outstanding in a more notorious Charles Manson like character. Let's talk about Harry Styles. In general, I think he is a pretty boy that knows he is a pretty boy and this movie doesn't help that theory and doesn't ingrain himself to me. One of the things that really bothered me in this was what I felt was a constant miss of switching between a British and American accent. However, after finishing, I am curious if it was intentional.
My Rating
This is for sure a slower movie. Drama with thriller type scenes, but also weird like Get Out or White Lotus. Even the music sounds very familiar and I can't place it. This is one of the only items that Olivia Wilde has directed to my knowledge and she knocked it out of the park. I was really impressed with the movie. What kills it from a great score is the ending and the slowness of the movie. You HAVE to pay attention to understand the movie and todays movie goers, my wife especially, this is too much. I am still giving it an 8 as that twist was not what I expected and that shows the quality/freshness of the writing.
Parental Rating
Intense sexual activity throughout, nudity throughout, scenes of self harm and suicide, but little language surprisingly. This movie is for sure NOT for my parents. The sexual content will be intense for them. Less dark than Black Swan, but still as aggressive. Rejected by both.
