Review

Andrew Garfield is outstanding. I really enjoy seeing British actors doing American accents, especially accents that are hard like a deep south accent. Garfield is fantastic at this. There isn't a time that I feel that you even know he isn't from the south, let alone British. The rest of the cast is also just as heady in their performance. There isn't a person that does a terrible job. I mean Vince Vaughn's drill instructor nicknames are hysterical. I laugh every time.

This movie is part of our Memorial Day movie month and it really is a gory example of the reason I have this list of movies. There was a lot of death and injury in WWII especially against the Japanese and Okinawans. It isn't without effort that we won WWII only after dropping 2 nuclear bombs. The Japanese had a fervent believe their god was going to support them as well as the Americans were demons. Please read some of the books out there about their beliefs during that war.

As this is based on a real story, I am not sure exactly the deviation from original story in this and honestly don't really care. This story is really well done showing both the good and bad of individuals on both sides of the war.

My Rating

This is a solid movie. Extremely entertaining and worth rewatching again and again. It is an 8 and you are probably asking "why not a 10?" The best answer I can give you is just that it isn't perfect. There are some things that could have been better, but I am not sure what they are/could have been specifically. It is just missing something. So it is an 8.

Parental Rating

This is a WAR movie. It is all about the actions taken during war which means lots of violence and gore. Language is limited as it was the 40s and this movie is a period piece. With that my dad is in and surprisingly my mom is in. While this isn't a family movie, this movie is about the power of will and sacrifice for the betterment of others. She wouldn't watch it by herself, she would watch it and enjoy it. Approved by both.
