Red Sparrow (2018)

Synopsis

Ballerina is hurt during a performance and becomes unable to continue that career. He career KGB uncle recruits her for the "Sparrows" (Using sex to get information) to work a CIA agent as the KGB looks for an informant inside the hire ranks.

Review

I know people hate Jennifer Lawrence, but she does a great and believable job with this. My wife noticed that he accent sucks, but she used to speak Russian so it is easier for her to hear. I on the other hand, didn't feel like it ever waivered out of her voice. It was consistent.

Most of the cast does a great job and honestly fills their roles without any issues. The story though.... goodness it could use some bolstering. It is very predictable and one-dimensional. No character growth, no real action, and the "spy" portion of these movies is very minimal. Figuring out who the insider is takes very little effort in the first 5 minutes of the movie if you watch it.

Having originally watched this years ago, when I watched it recently with my wife, I would have bet HARD money that it took place in the 70s. No it doesn't. Its modern day. There are cell phones and everything and I didn't remember that at all. The cars I had in my head were from the 70s, but I mean it does take place in the Eastern Bloc.

Rating

Its entertaining. Nothing crazy, just entertaining and a little more than background noise. It is a good spy movie to watch, but nothing really to write home about. Its a 6. Like me.

Parental Rating

I am positive that both my parents have watched this. I don't think my mom liked it, but I think she has watched it. There are some torture scenes and an attempted rape scene which is where I think my mom stepped out, but I think she would have watched it for the story. I know some of the books she listens to have similar things. The language is pretty standard for an "R" rated film. Nothing to crazy, but it is there.

I say all that to say, Dad "Yes", Mom "no".
